The Mmofra Trom Bead Project is a social enterprise designed by Bentley University students to provide a sustainable, income generating project to fund education for Ghanaian children.
The Mmofra Trom Center is an elementary school located near Somanya. Ghana. This school awards scholarships to children that have been selected by the chief of their village to attend Mmofra Trom because they’re families could no longer take care of them due to disease or untimely death. These children gain one of the best elementary educations in Ghana, with credit to this scholarship opportunity.
Prior to the Mmofra Trom Bead Project, there was no funding to send these children to high school or college. 100% of the net income generated through the MTBP provides funding for a secondary education to the children. MTBP’s efforts have ensured that children will be able to pursue their ambitions, end the cycle of poverty and make a difference in their community.
Income is generated through the sales of recycled-glass beaded bracelets.
The children enjoy spending a few Saturday mornings a month stringing bracelets with the vibrant beads made by local artisans. The founders of the Mmofra Trom Bead Project realized that there could be a market for these bracelets in the United States that would generate money that could be used toward the students’ education costs.
The American members of the Mmofra Trom Bead Project attend Bentley University and learn the skills needed to run a social enterprise. They learn the importance of raising revenues through vendor outreach, fundraising, marketing, finance and accounting. The Ghanaian members (5/16 female) of the project purchase the beads from the local bead makers, string the bracelets and send the bracelets to the United States.
Mmofra Trom Bead Project customers are the most vital aspect of the project. Without people willing to redirect their consumption patterns to support socially-conscious businesses, the Mmofra Trom Bead Project would not exist. Thank you for being a part of the Mmofra Trom Bead Project.
